Memorial Day is next week, a day to honor and mourn the women and men who gave their lives in military service to this country. I’ve always been proud that my grandfathers, uncles and cousins served this country and eternally grateful they came home to their families. I recognize my family’s fortune means other families suffered great loss and each year I reflect on that and send love and condolences out into the world. It’s important to me, to remember that Memorial Day is more than “the unofficial start of summer.” Reflecting on how grateful I am for the sacrifices that have been made for our freedom helps me to do that.
Memorial Day is also an opportunity to celebrate those freedoms and live the lives those sacrifices have afforded us. So, in honor of that, I’m in favor of the barbecues, family gatherings, laughter and stories that take place each year. Americana décor isn’t really my thing, but each year I do feel moved to put up some red, white and blue. If you’re like me and you want that all-American summer vibe without looking like a full-on Firecracker popsicle, look below for some inspiration.
