Movies for Rainy Sundays

A rainy fall day or a winter blizzard calls for a cozy day inside.  Light the fireplace and some candles, wrap up in your coziest blankets and watch some of my favorite movies.

  • American Dreamer– This movie never fails to crack me up.  I think it’s absolutely brilliant.  Don’t let the strong 80’s vibe put you off, it’s clever and funny.  I find myself wishing that the women I know (with wanker husbands) would go off on a grand adventure like this.
  • Some Like it Hot– Marilyn Monroe, Jack Lemmon, Tony Curtis.  Need I say more?  Another great comedy.  There have been people in my life who have decided not to like this movie simply because it’s black and white.  Ridiculous!  If you limit yourself that way then you don’t deserve to see this treasure.
  • Harry Potter–  Magic, friendship, adventure.  My favorite will always be the Sorcerer’s Stone, but all of the movies are fantastic and perfect for a dark cold, rainy day.
  • John Wick–  I do not recommend the sequel, but the first John Wick is great.  I’m a sucker for a movie where the main character is a bad-ass, taking vengeance and destroying the enemy.  It is violent so take note if that’s not your thing.
  • Practical Magic–  Perfect around Halloween, family protecting each other and realizing it’s not so bad to be different.  If you love this movie, do yourself a favor and don’t read the book.  I was SO disappointed.  (Side note, if you read the book first and then watched the movie I’d like to know what you thought!)
  • Sleepless in Seattle–  Laugh if you want to, but I love to watch this movie on a cloudy winter day.  I love Tom Hanks and the movie is a sweet love story.  I like that he was so in love with his wife, I love his house on the water in Seattle.  It just gives me a warm feeling for some reason.
  • National Treasure– The first and the second movie.  I love the history and the adventure, even if it is all pretend.  There’s a feeling I get when I watch these movies that I can’t quite describe.  It’s similar to how I feel when I watch The Goonies or The Mummy (the original with Brendan Fraser).  It’s nostalgic with a dash of adventure.  It makes me hopeful about our past and our future.  It makes me think there’s something far more interesting I could be doing with my life.

I try to stay away from movies that are too tragic or sad, I feel like there is already so much sadness in the world.  When I watch movies or read, I want happiness or excitement.  Reality has no place!  Do you have movies you could watch a million times?  I’d like to add some new movies to my winter rotation.  I’ll share my summer favorites once the temperature starts to rise again!

XOXO
